DMP arrests 90 BNP men

Raids to arrest more will continue, says spokesperson

Dhaka Metropolitan Police has arrested at least 90 BNP leaders and activists on charges of engaging in clashes with law enforcers and vandalising vehicles.

Attacks by BNP men left a joint commissioner and at least 19 other police personnel injured, said Faruque Hossain, deputy commissioner (media) of DMP.

BNP men vandalised at least 30 vehicles, 10 of which belong to the police, he told reporters at the DMP Media Centre.

Cases against the BNP men involved in sabotage and attacks are being filed with different police stations in the capital, he added.

Terming today’s BNP programmes illegal, Faruque said BNP activists set fire to vehicles and threw crude bombs.

“In response to the unrest, the police used rubber bullets to disperse the illegal gatherings and drove the rioters away from the streets,” he said.

Police are continuing their drive to catch those responsible for creating chaos and public suffering, he added.

Around 11:38pm on Friday, the DMP in a message said it had not given permission for demonstrations at the entries to Dhaka.
