Police have detained at least 30 BNP leaders and activists from a checkpost at Abdullahpur in the capital’s Uttara this morning.
Sarkar Shahnoor Islam Rony, nephew of central BNP leader Hasan Uddin Sarkar, is among the detainees. Shahnoor ran in the Gazipur city polls as an independent mayoral candidate.
Nazmul Hasan Mondal, member secretary of Tongi Purba Thana Jubo Dal, said he left Tongi with party leaders and activists around 11:00am to join the BNP’s grand rally at Dhaka’s Nayapaltan. When they reached Abdullahpur checkpost, police detained 30 BNP men, including Shahnoor, he added.
However, Kazi Nasir Uddin, OC of Uttara East Police Station, said all the detainees were released later in the day.
Tongi Traffic Police Sergeant Tarek said pressure of vehicles on the road in Gazipura bus stand area was comparatively low.
Eight checkposts were set up on a stretch of Dhaka-Mymensingh highway from Gazipur’s Chandana intersection to Tongi Bridge area.
