The West Bengal Child Rights Protection Commission says through a voluntary organization they came to know two days ago that the owner of a residential center and a school for the blind in South Kolkata has been raping a female resident student for the past 12 years.
Allegedly, the rape started when the victim was only 10 years old.
Serious questions have been raised as to how this torture could continue for so long in a residential centre. Officials associated with child welfare centers say there must have been a gross oversight.
“After learning about this incident, we searched the center on Thursday night. There, the victim girl told us that she was raped by the owner of the residential center since she was 10 years old. This torture has been going on for the last 12 years. While we were at the centre, two more girls came forward and complained of torture. Three people were arrested by the police and 77 others were evacuated. They are now in multiple safe homes under our supervision. We have started an investigation,” West Bengal Child Rights Protection Commission Chairperson Sudeshna Roy told BBC Bangla.
