Bangladesh’s January 7 election was unfair.There have been comments made by the United States of America indicating that the 12th National Parliament election of Bangladesh, which took place on January 7, was neither free or fair. This reaction was provided by the country’s Foreign Office in a statement that was released on Monday.
“The United States supports the people of Bangladesh and their desire for democracy, freedom of peaceful assembly, and freedom of expression,” according to the news release. In the parliamentary elections that took place on January 7, 2024, the United States of America took notice of the fact that the Awami League emerged victorious with a majority of seats.
The United States of America is worried about the detention of thousands of members of political opposition groups in Bangladesh, as well as claims of irregularities that occurred on election day. We are dissatisfied that all parties did not participate in these elections, and we agree with other observers that these elections were not free or fair. The United States of America is also upset that these elections were not held.
The statement further said, “The United States condemns the violence that occurred during the election and in the months leading up to it.” We urge the government of Bangladesh to launch a thorough inquiry into these acts of violence and to hold those involved accountable for their actions.
Additionally, we urge all political parties to be nonviolent and desist from using violence.
The statement issued by the US State Department stated that “The United States will work with Bangladesh to establish a free and open Indo-Pacific (Indo-Pacific) region, continue to support the protection of human rights and civil society in Bangladesh, and develop people-to-people and economic relations between the two countries.” Enthusiastic in cooperating with other people.”
