Body of madrasa girl recovered in Cox’s Bazar, suspect held

Rapid Action Battalion recovered the body of an eight-year-old madrasa student from Teknaf upazila of Cox’s Bazar yesterday evening.

The deceased, Faria Jannat, a third grader at Hnila Jamia Islamia Madrasa, had been missing since Thursday evening, reports our staff correspondent in Cox’s Bazar quoting Rab.

A Rab-15 team recovered the body from the madrasa after arresting suspect Mohammad Irfan, 18, of the same madrasa, said Major Syed Sadiqul Haque, commanding officer (in-charge) of Rab-15.

Speaking at a press conference on the madrasa premises around 10:00pm yesterday, Sadiqul said Irfan during primary interrogation admitted to have raped and strangled the girl to death.

Irfan took the girl to the madrasa on Thursday evening, where his father is the vice principal. He took her to room-22, raped her and strangled her to death to cover up the crime, the Rab official said.

Irfan, also a relative of Faria, took the chance to take the victim to the madrasa as it was vacant due to a holiday on the occasion of Holy Ashura, he said.

Sadiqul said the arrestee dumped the body in a drain behind the madrasa around 3:00am.

After killing the girl, Irfan called her parents to inform that she had been abducted. He demanded Tk 5 lakh as ransom, the Rab official said.

The victim’s family filed an abduction case with Teknaf Police Station on Thursday night.

Rab then launched a shadow investigation and arrested Irfan.

Police said the body was sent to Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital for an autopsy.
