Donald Lu’s letter to the three parties calling for unconditional dialogue.US Assistant Secretary of State for South and Central Asia Donald Lu has written to the three main political parties of Bangladesh, Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party.

Jatiya Party Secretary General Mujibul Haque said on Monday afternoon that the letter was given to him by Peter D Haas, the US Ambassador to Dhaka. The ambassador told him that the letter will also be given to Awami League and BNP.

However, Awami League office secretary Biplab Barua told Prothom Alo around 6 pm that they have not yet received any such letter.

Jatiya Party Secretary General Mujibul Haque said the letter states that the United States expects free, fair, impartial and participatory elections in Bangladesh. It also calls for unconditional dialogue.

Peter Haas held a meeting with party chairman Golam Mohammad Quader (GM Quader) at Jatiya Party office in Banani, Dhaka today. After the meeting, General Secretary of Jatiya Party Mujibul Haque told the journalists present.

Mujibul Haque said, ‘The US ambassador has basically brought a letter written by their Assistant Minister for Central and South Asian Affairs, Donald Lu. He handed over the letter to our party chairman. Peter Haas said, the same letter is being sent to all three parties – Awami League, BNP and Jatiya Party.

Later, Mujibul Haque told Prothom Alo that the letter basically said three things. First, the United States wants to see a free, fair and participatory election in Bangladesh. Second, dialogue is spoken of unconditionally. Third, the letter reiterated the visa policy adopted by the US to facilitate free and fair elections.

The letter was given before the announcement of the schedule for the 12th National Assembly elections of the country.


At 3 o’clock the National Party meeting started with Peter Haas. The meeting lasted about 40 minutes. In addition to Jatiya Party Chairman Golam Mohammad Quader, Party Secretary General Mujibul Haque, Party Co-Chairman Kazi Firoz Rashid and Jatiya Party Chairman’s Advisor and Special Envoy Masroor Mawla were present in the meeting.
