‘Feud over money led to the murder’

Nibir, Md Shahjalal, and former Shahjahanpur thana Chhatra League leader Oliullah Rubel were known to be close friends and notorious for extorting hawkers on footpaths, and operating goat markets in Malibagh.

However, their friendship deteriorated when Nibir and Shahjalal discovered that Rubel had been operating a goat market without their involvement and withheld the profits during the occasion of Eid ul Azha.

Enraged by this “betrayal”, they devised a plan to murder Rubel.

Nibir and Shahjalal then hired a killer, Habib Ahsan. They paid him Tk 5,000 to buy two machetes.

Nibir then left for the US before Eid and remained in contact with Habib as they set the plan in motion.

On July 21, Habib and another person attacked Rubel with the purchased machetes, and he succumbed to the injuries soon after.

Habib revealed the details of the crime in a court hearing before a metropolitan magistrate in Dhaka yesterday.

“Nibir contacted me an hour before the attack, while Shahjalal met me in person an hour after,” he added.

Meanwhile, law enforcers have arrested 10 persons in connection with the killing of Rubel, also a Jubo League leader.

A team of Detective Branch (Motijheel Division) of police arrested eight persons while Rab members arrested two others from different areas in the capital on Saturday.

The arrestees are: Md Shahjalal, 37, Rafiqul Islam, 38, Nur Alam, 42, Sumon Mir, 28, Habib Ahsan, 22, Alif Hossain, 21, Rabiul Sani, 21, Mehedi Hasan, 19, Adnan Asif, 20 and Md Shakil, 20.

Rubel, 36, was a candidate for the general secretary post of Jubo League’s ward 12 unit under Shahjahanpur Thana.

Meanwhile, Shahjalal and Nibir were followers of an opposition faction.

The DB said Shahjalal is accused in at least 25 cases while police are trying to arrest Nibir and one Anon, his accomplice.

DB also seized a private car, two motorcycles and recovered two machetes from the arrestees, said DB chief Muhammad Harun Or Rashid while briefing journalists at the DMP media centre yesterday.

According to Habib’s statement at the court, he has been involved with BCL politics for the last two and a half years and used to move with Shahjahanpur thana BCL president.

Around 11:00pm on July 20, Anon informed him of Rubel’s location and since then they were waiting in front of Abujar Gifari college for Rubel to show up.

Habib said Alif Hossain was with him at the time. Anon again called him at 12:10am and informed that Rubel was heading towards the college. When Rubel reached the spot at 12:40am, both of them stabbed him seven to eight times.
