JL leader’s killing in Dhaka: DB says suspects identified

Detective Branch of police today said they have identified the suspects involved in the murder of Shahjahanpur Jubo League leader Oliullah Rubel.

Police have the names of those who were directly involved in the incident and of those who assisted them. The suspects will be arrested soon, DB Additional Commissioner Muhammad Harun Or Rashid said at a press briefing at the DMP media centre today.

When asked whether the Rubel murder was linked to the killing of Awami League leader Jahidul Islam Tipu, Harun said both incidents took place in the Shahjahanpur area, and police will be able to determine that after the suspects are arrested.

A group of armed assailants on early Friday hacked Oliullah Rubel, 36, a candidate vying for the general secretary post of Jubo League’s Ward 12 unit under Shahjahanpur, to death when he was returning home after work, family members said.

Rubel, also a former office secretary of Shahjahanpur Thana unit of BCL, was in the business of providing internet services and supplying water in the locality.

Police collected CCTV footage of the incident which showed two assailants chasing a wounded Rubel on the street.

The victim’s wife in the case statement mentioned that Rubel’s killing was a “planned murder”.

She said Rubel had rivalry with many as he was involved with Chhatra League and was a candidate fighting for the post in Jubo League’s Ward 12 unit.

Besides, he had enmity with many others over different incidents, reads the case statement.

Rubel’s brother-in-law, Mamun Ahmed Siddique, said the killing was political.
