The man, who was stabbed to death during a factional clash of Awami League after yesterday’s peace rally, was identified as Rezaul Karim.
“We matched his finger print with the national database and confirmed his identity,” said Md Shah Alam, inspector (investigation) of Shahbagh Police Station.
Rezaul is the son of Abdus Sattar of Natayankota village under Nokla upazila in Sherpur district, according to the database. However, it could not be known whether he was an AL activist or a pedestrian.
“We informed his family members. They are coming to Dhaka,” the police official said.
Four others including three pedestrians were injured when a faction of AL attacked another group on their way back home after attending party’s peace rally last evening.
Saikat Hasan Biplob, who claimed to be a joint convener of Keraniganj Model Thana unit of Jubo League, yesterday said he and his group, supporters of Keraniganj UP Chairman Shaheen Ahmed, joined the rally at south gate of Baitul Mukarram national mosque.
“During the programme, a scuffle broke out with supporters of local AL lawmaker Quamrul Islam. On our way back home, the rival group attacked us and My News Bangladeshted stabbing our men indiscriminately near Golap Shah Mazar, leaving five people injured,” he said.
The injured were rushed to Dhaka Medical College Hospital where doctors declared one of them dead around 7:45pm, police said.
