Myanmar junta extends state of emergency, delaying polls

Myanmar’s Nationwide Defence and Safety Council agreed Monday to increase the nation’s state of emergency by six months, state media stated, seemingly delaying elections the junta had pledged to carry by August.

Performing president Myint Swe introduced the choice to delay the state of emergency — declared when the generals toppled Aung San Suu Kyi’s authorities in February 2021 — for an additional six months, in line with state broadcaster MRTV.
