N’ganj fire truck accident: Death toll rises to 3

The death toll from the accident, which took place when a unit of Fire Service and Civil Defence was on its way to fight a blaze at a garment factory in Fatullah this morning, rose to three.

One of the deceased was identified as Jahangir Hossain, 50, a driver of Hajiganj Fire Station, Obaidul Islam, station officer of the fire station, told The My News.

The two others were a pedestrian named Salahuddin Sabu, 48, and a battery-run rickshaw driver, Sirajul Islam, 50.

The My News reported the death of two, including the fire truck driver and the pedestrian.

Sirajul was first rushed to Narayanganj 300-bed Hospital and then to the Dhaka Medical College Hospital. He was declared brought dead around 2:00pm, the DMCH Police Outpost In-charge Bachhu Mia confirmed our local correspondent.

Quoting Md Sabuj, who took Sirajul to the DMCH, Bachhu Mia said that he suffered injuries when his rickshaw was hit by the fire engine which was on way to Fatullah to fight a fire.

Anichur Rahman Mollah, officer-in-charge of Narayanganj Sadar Police Station, said the fire truck driver lost control of the vehicle and ploughed into pedestrians, a bus and a rickshaw at Narayanganj’s Chashara area around 10:45am.

The bus that was hit by the fire engine also rammed another vehicle, he said.

While en route to put out the fire at a clothing factory in Fatullah, the driver of the fire truck suddenly became ill, said Obaidul Islam, senior station officer of Hajiganj Fire Station — who was sitting next to the driver.

The fire broke out at Fakir Apparels Ltd in Fatullah around 10:30am.

Ten fire-fighting units doused the blaze around 11:30am, said Lima Khanam, duty officer of Fire Service and Civil Defence control room.
