Sailors are field-independent in tension

Sailors are field-independent in tension.Awami League president Sheikh Hasina has announced that if BNP does not participate in the 12th National Assembly elections, it will be flexible about rebel candidates. So that no one wins unopposed, he has announced to keep alternative candidates for competitive elections. He announced this during an exchange of views with party nominees at Ganabhaban on Sunday.

After the party chief’s announcement, sleep has become haram for many candidates. They are not relieved even though they got the symbol to fight for the party in the 12th parliamentary elections. Many nominated ministers and MPs are not able to breathe a sigh of relief to see rebel candidates in many constituencies. Besides, those who got boats especially those who got nominations in seats of strong candidates of 14-party alliance may have to leave boats due to compromise. Again, if BNP announces to come to the polls, there is a strong possibility of an agreement with Jatiya Party at any moment. In that case, many candidates may have to get off the boat. All together, the boatmen are under tension due to the fear of party rebel candidates and coalition concessions.

Last Sunday, Awami League officially announced the party’s final candidacy for 298 of the 300 seats. Compared to the last two elections, new faces have been brought in the candidate list of Awami League in 104 seats in this election. A maximum of 71 members of the current 11th National Parliament, including three state ministers, have been dropped. Yesterday the letter of allotment of ‘Boat’ symbol was distributed to the final candidates.

They are running in their constituencies with the letter of the boat symbol in hand. But the declaration of independent candidates by de-nominated MP-leaders has caused renewed anxiety for many candidates. It is known that in the past, Awami League has taken a strict stand regarding the rebel candidates, but due to the reality this time, Awami League will show a somewhat flexible attitude towards the rebels. It is said that such a plan has been taken from a strategic position to make the election competitive.

Already, two dozen sitting MPs who have not been nominated by the party have announced an independent fight. On the other hand, many candidates are stubborn to fight against the MPs who have dominated the area for a long time. Especially the party leaders and workers are angry against the families of the MPs. Some MP-ministers have established their own ‘governance’ in the area. Several leaders are voting against the boat to get rid of this regime. On the other hand, if BNP does not come to the polls, Awami League’s rival Awami League can become the main opponent. In the end, many heavyweight MP-ministers will burn their foreheads if the party does not toughen up.

There are glimpses on the ground that independent candidates may set a winning record. Amir Hossain Amu, a member of Awami League’s advisory council and coordinator and spokesperson of the central 14 parties, said, ‘We will hold elections in a 14-party alliance. We (Awami League) have finalized the list of candidates in our Parliamentary Nomination Board meeting. This is our party candidate list. Party president Sheikh Hasina will sit and discuss with the alliance partners very soon and finalize the issue of seat sharing.
