Tamil Nadu ravaged by heavy rains 500 passengers stranded in one station.The railway line has been damaged due to soil erosion due to rain. Below the line, the soil has moved away, leaving only the iron tracks with cement slabs hanging.

The rescue operation has been put on hold as the road leading to the station has been cut off. The train was going from Tiruchendur to Chennai.

Southern Railway Chief PRO Guhanesan told NDTV, ‘Passengers are safe. The National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) is trying to reach the station. Trying to send food is going on.

In some areas, despite the respite from rain, the work of releasing excess water from the dam continued, resulting in flooding. Chief Minister MK Stalin has written to Prime Minister Narendra Modi seeking an appointment on December 19 to discuss the rain and flood situation in the southern parts of the state.

Kanyakumari, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi and Tirunelveli, four districts in the south were affected by extremely heavy rainfall. Kayalpattinam in Tuticorin received 95 cm of rain in 24 hours.

The Thamaraparani river has flowed along with the release of water from the Papanasam dam. This led to inundation of several low-lying houses in Tuticorin and Tirunelveli. More than seven thousand people have been evacuated to safe places in these four districts.
