In his condolence message, the President sought forgiveness and peace for the souls of those killed in the accident and expressed his condolences to the bereaved family members. At the same time, he wished for the speedy recovery of those injured in the accident.
Around 3:30 pm on Monday, three coaches of the Egarsindur passenger train were severely damaged by the impact of the container train. The bodies of 17 people have been recovered so far. Hundreds were injured. After the accident, rail communication between Dhaka, Chittagong, Sylhet and Noakhali has been stopped.
